What Charlie Munger
Taught Me About Marketing
Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett's long-time business partner and one of the most insightful thinkers in business, is famous for a concept he calls the "latticework of mental models." He believed that to make better decisions, you need a framework that pulls together core principles from many disciplines—psychology, economics, engineering, biology, and more.
Munger said: "You've got to have models in your head. And you've got to array your experience—both vicarious and direct—on this latticework of models.”
That idea changed the way I think about marketing forever.
As someone who works closely with small business owners, I see a recurring challenge: they're often sold isolated tools and tactics. A new app, a better ad platform, a flashy website feature. But these one-off solutions rarely solve the real problem.
What small business owners need isn't more tools. They need a better framework.
That's why I built the Six Marketing Success Systems (SMSS). It's a kind of marketing "latticework" designed specifically for small businesses. It brings together the six core systems every business needs to grow and succeed:
1. Reliability — How reliably do you deliver the experience your customer desires?
2. Reputation — How are you viewed and experienced by prospects and customers in the marketplace?
3. Readiness — How responsive are you to opportunities from prospects and customers?
4. Resell — How are you maximizing the lifetime value of each customer by turning them into repeat customers that make larger purchases?
5. Remarket — How are you keeping the attention of your prospects and customers over time?
6. Reach — How are you reaching new prospects and expanding the awareness of your products or services?
Each one is a mental model. On their own, they explain a slice of your marketing. But together? They form a complete mental framework for thinking clearly and acting wisely about your growth.
The beauty of this approach is that it helps you:
Diagnose problems (Where is the real problem?)
Prioritize actions (What’s the most leveraged thing to fix?)
Make better decisions (What’s most important right now?)
Most small business owners don’t need more software. They need a strategy that makes sense of the software they already have—and aligns everything toward growth.
That’s what I learned from Munger: systems beat tactics. Frameworks beat features. And mental models beat marketing gimmicks.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed by the latest marketing trends, step back and ask yourself: Are you adding another tool to the pile—or are you building a latticework that actually works?
Imagine waking up a few weeks from now with a marketing system that actually runs smoothly, brings in new leads, reactivates old ones, and keeps your customers coming back—all without burning you out. That's what happens when you install the Six Marketing Success Systems in your business.
